Several things are inspiring this Sunday-morning diary:
- Running into George Lakoff yesterday (yes, he's coming) and thinking about yKos framing.
- A photo of Markos on page 1 of a yKos SF Chronicle article quoting JetBlue as having "learned some lessons" (diaried separately by Nellcote and Turkana).
- A Siegel's excellent front-paged diary reminded me that we haven't closed some loops for how and where and when various interest groups will meet, how people will rideshare, share rooms, etc.
- A few other topic-specific yKos diaries are likely to scroll off, so I figure cross-promotion and diary rescue (I've linked some in the body below) will make it easier for yKos participants to find the pieces and coordinate.
- I haven't seen any diaries by or about the yearlyKos exhibitors, so I thought this could be an opportunity for comment.
With that, welcome to Sunday's unofficial yearlyKos Open Thread. Perhaps someone else can pick up the torch each of the next few days.
yKos Framing
At the Berkeley Farmer's Market yesterday, I ran into George Lakoff. As our paths crossed while shopping, I asked, "see you in Chicago?" He had a highly affirmative reply. Somehow, I don't think he's going to Lollapalooza. Seeing him (and digging out one of his books that I picked up at yKos last year) reminded me to start thinking about how and what we communicate at yearlyKos. This can be a place to check in and talk about why you're going, what your hopes are, and cut through what's going to be a lot of media attention.
yKos-related diary rescue
Here's a few of the yearlyKos Convention related diaries I've seen today:
- Fair & Balanced YKos press report
- S.F. Chronicle has Front Page Story on Yearly Kos
Nellcote beat me to the punch by writing about today's SF Chronicle article that partly inspired this diary; Turkana also wrote about it. I'll post my comments on that over there.
- NEW! Flying Solo II and other off-the-schedule Ykos events (updated), a Friday diary by mem from somerville, is the best reference for happenings. Mem, if you can bring some Herrell's hot fudge from Harvard Square, I'll bring some Scharffen Berger chocolate from Berkeley.
- NEW! YearlyKos: Artsy Phartsy and Fun!
cosmic debris has assembled a terrific arts guide available in diary, PDF, and paper formats.
- NEW! Vegetables of Mass Destruction - Your YearlyKos Appetizer
OrangeClouds115 offers a preview of the Saturday-morning yKos food panel.
- YearlyKos CANCELLED: Rupert Murdoch bought it, shot it
David Boyle has a lovely snarkalicious take on the conference, inspiring calls for a Wac-kos t-shirt: wear it with pride.
- Master index to all YearlyKos 2007 photos
snorfbat helpfully points out the dKospedia link for yKos 2007 photos. Unfortunately, dKospedia isn't accepting new users at this time, but Ms./Mr. Bat has offered to help get links posted.
- What technology are you taking to YKC?
Quaker Warrior asks "What kinds of technology (high or low) are people taking with them? Laptops? Tape recorders? Digital cameras? Internet tablets? Cell phone? MP3 players? Legal pads and pens? If you went last year, what did you take and use, take and wish you hadn't, not take and wish you had?"
- Poll: Will You Talk To Fox At YearlyKos?
jazzmaniac asks, "When some Fox Flunky shoves a microphone in your face, what will you do?"
- use by 8/2/07 a Ykos06 photodiary
dewey of the desert brings us back to the 2006 Las Vegas yearlyKos with a photodiary.
- And of course don't neglect sheddhead's wonderful Chicago Treasures series.
So what have I missed? Add it in comments and I'll try to pull it up here.
Conference Participant Coordination
A Siegel's excellent front-paged diary reminded me that practice makes perfect, and that we haven't closed some loops for how and where and when various interest groups will meet: Climate Project trainees, SF Bay Area Kossacks, cohousers, ecovillagers and intentional communitarians... and many more, I'm sure. And with the conference sold out and the convention hotels full, and the convention itself not willing to take on the risks of roommate-matching and ridesharing and advising, there's a hole to be filled, especially with Thunderstorms and hot weather forecast. And the conference coordinators are, I'm sure (from having put on much smaller events myself) quite busy with logistics at this point.
(NEW! Remember to use the Official Schedule as a starting point for your planning). And see comments for other fun things like The Extraordinaires Thursday evening.... even if you arrive late.
So the comments are your opportunity. Not going and want to send another Kossack in your place? (since registration is closed and there will be no on-site registration) Want to share a room? (since the convention hotels are full). Looking for a chance to volunteer to at least get into exhibits (work a booth) or need local help?
Exhibitors: be heard
With so much excitement in the main lecture halls for presentations, it's easy to forget that we've got some great exhibitors as well, commercial and nonprofit, in not one but two rooms. If demand warrants, I'll do a separate diary tomorrow about 'em. But please use the comments to say something about your presence, or who you're looking forward to seeing there.
(full disclosure: I'm organizing a nonprofit booth myself)
The rest is up to you
When I talk about dKos and yKos, I have to explain: it's not about the founder or management or even the technology - what makes the community work is the incredible people we've got here, and a forum that lets us show our best. Ladies and gentlemen and BiPM, the floor is yours. UPDATE 1:22 PM PDT: Many great additions and some useful discussion about kids' activities in the comments.
